The History and Engineering of the Table Mountain Cableway
How Table Mountain's cableway grew from a wartime-delayed dream into today's rotating Rotair cars — the engineers, the funders and the 1997 upgrade.

Cape Town first tried to conquer Table Mountain by rail, not cable. In the 1870s, city residents proposed a funicular railway up the slopes, but the plan stalled and the Second Boer War pushed it aside. The City Council revived the idea in 1912, only for the First World War to interrupt it again. For decades, reaching the flat summit meant a serious hike, and there was no shortage of appetite for something easier — just no engineering plan that had made it past paper. It took until the mid-1920s, and a different kind of engineer altogether, for the idea to move from proposal to construction. What finally broke the stalemate was not a railway at all, but a Norwegian cableway specialist with a very different vision for reaching the summit.
The Norwegian plan and its backers
In 1926, Norwegian engineer Trygve Strømsøe presented cableway plans to three of Cape Town's most influential figures — Sir Alfred Theodore Hennessy, Sir David Graaff and mining magnate Sir Ernest Oppenheimer. Where a funicular needed a fixed track cut into the mountainside, an aerial cableway needed only two stations and a line strung between them, a far less disruptive way to climb a cliff face. The backers formed the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company to raise capital and award the construction contract, and work on the lower and upper stations began soon after. Nearly fifty years after the first railway proposal, the mountain finally had a workable plan — and this time the money and the engineering arrived together.
Built by a German wire-rope specialist
The contract went to Adolf Bleichert & Co. of Leipzig, one of the era's leading wire-ropeway builders, and the project took roughly two years to complete at a cost of £60,000 — a substantial outlay for a single tourist attraction in 1920s Cape Town. Workers built both the lower and upper stations and, at the summit, a tearoom for the first visitors to reach the top without walking. The cableway opened on 4 October 1929, inaugurated by the Mayor of Cape Town, A. J. S. Lewis. The original wooden-bodied car, topped with a tin roof, carried around twenty passengers and a conductor and took close to ten minutes to complete the climb — modest by later standards, but a genuine engineering feat for its time, and an instant sensation with the public.
Decades on largely the same cars
Once open, the cableway settled into a long working life built around those original cars. Generations of visitors rode them to the summit through the middle decades of the twentieth century, as Cape Town grew around the mountain and the cableway became one of its defining landmarks. But the cars that had been remarkable in 1929 were, by the 1990s, a genuine bottleneck: a small-capacity car meant long queues on busy days as visitor numbers climbed far beyond what the 1929 designers had planned for. The operator and its engineers began planning the first truly major overhaul in the cableway's history — one that would not just replace the cars, but change how every passenger experienced the ride itself.
1997: the Rotair transformation
The upgrade that arrived in 1996–97 was built around a new car from the Swiss manufacturer Garaventa, part of the Doppelmayr Garaventa Group, and it changed the ride in two ways at once. Capacity jumped from around twenty-five passengers in the old cars to 65 in the new ones, cutting queues dramatically, while a double-cable system improved stability in the wind that so often threatens the cableway's operations. The signature feature, though, was the floor: built to rotate a full 360 degrees during the four-to-five-minute climb, so every passenger, not just those pressed against the windows, saw the whole panorama — city, sea and mountainside — over the course of the ride. The cars still running today are direct descendants of that 1997 design, nicknamed 'Rotair' for the rotation that made them famous.
A landmark still being maintained, not just remembered
The cableway's story has not stopped at 1997. In January 2019 it welcomed its 28 millionth visitor since 1929, a figure that says as much about Cape Town's tourism growth as about the machine itself. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company operates the ride under a long-term concession granted by SANParks, the government agency that manages Table Mountain National Park and owns the land the cableway stands on — a lease arrangement that keeps the operator on the hook for reinvestment in the machinery, not just its upkeep of a museum piece. Every closure for maintenance, every safety inspection and every weather-driven shutdown is part of keeping a nearly century-old idea — lift Cape Town's residents and visitors to the summit without a serious climb — running safely on cables engineered for the twenty-first century. Understanding that history makes the short, smooth ride up feel like what it is: the current chapter of a very long project.
