Quick answer

Book a pre-booked cable car ticket if you want the fast-track entrance and a ticket in hand before you arrive. A standard ticket can still mean queueing on busy days, and when the cableway is full only ticket holders are admitted. The cableway runs weather permitting, and wind, bad weather and an annual maintenance shutdown can all close it. Check the operator's live status on the day, and keep your booking flexible.

What you're booking

The ticket on this site is a pre-booked, fast-track cable car ticket for Table Mountain, sold by Beyond Africa Safaris - Gray Line South Africa. It covers the ride up and down in the rotating cars, with entry through a separate fast-track entrance. The visit is shown as two hours, which is the whole outing and not the ride itself. It is a ticket, not a tour: you explore the summit at your own pace. The provider sends your ticket by WhatsApp or iMessage, so give a mobile number that works on one of them. The booking page shows the live price in your own currency.

Return, one-way and concessions

The operator sells both return and one-way tickets, with separate child, senior and student rates. Children under four travel free on its tickets, and the child rate covers ages four to seventeen. Concessions depend on proof: seniors need a valid South African ID, and students need a valid student card and can buy only at the ticket office. The ticket sold here is for the ride up and down. If you plan to hike one way, the operator's one-way ticket is the better match.

  • Return: up and down by cable car
  • One-way: for hikers who walk up or down
  • Under four: free on the operator's tickets
  • Seniors and students: concession rates need ID

What skip-the-line saves, and what it doesn't

A standard ticket does not guarantee a short wait. The operator says you will still need to queue for the cableway on busy days, and it sells a Fast Track option to skip that queue. The ticket sold here also uses a separate fast-track entrance. What no ticket changes is the trip itself: everyone rides in the same cars, and the weather decides whether the cableway runs. The saving is the queue, not the ride. Queues change by day and season, so the operator shows live waiting times for the lower and upper stations on its website.

Why booking ahead matters on a full day

On days when the cableway is at capacity, the operator says only ticket holders are admitted and onsite ticket sales are suspended. That is the strongest practical reason to hold a ticket before you arrive. The operator calls summer the busiest season and suggests arriving early for the first car, or coming later, when it is often quieter. A booking with free cancellation and reserve now, pay later lets you pick a likely day without paying today, then change your plans up to 24 hours before.

Booking here or from the operator

You can buy from the operator instead. Its tickets are sold online through its ticketing agency, Webtickets, and at its ticket office. Its site says cableway tickets are only valid if bought through that agency, and names Cape Town Tourism and City Sightseeing South Africa as the other authorised outlets. The ticket on this page comes from a separate tour provider, so that provider's terms apply and it issues the ticket itself. Booking here suits you if you want the price in your own currency and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If you want the operator's own terms, buy from the operator. Read your confirmation either way.

Wind, cloud and bad weather

The operator publishes its hours as weather permitting and says the cableway may be closed in bad weather. Wind is a common reason, and the operator's visitor guide has told visitors to return to the upper station when a hooter sounds, because high winds are approaching and the station will close. The tablecloth is the cloud that tumbles over the edge: a south-easterly wind pushes moist air up the slopes into colder air, where it condenses. If a closure catches you, a ticket from this site stays valid for seven days from its date. If you cannot use it in that time, contact the provider for a refund.

The annual maintenance shutdown

Once a year the cableway closes for planned maintenance. The operator describes it as part of its maintenance schedule, in line with international standards. In past shutdowns the shops, restaurants and other facilities at both stations closed to the public along with the cars, while the mountain stayed open to hikers, who were warned they would have to walk back down. The operator announces each year's dates on its website, so check them before you choose a day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before covers you if you find a closure after you have booked.

Is it open today?

Don't judge from the sky alone. The operator's website shows at the top whether the cableway is open or closed, the first and last car times for the day, and waiting times at both stations. It also links to a live webcam. The operator's official app, on the Apple and Google stores, shows real-time weather, operating status and waiting times. Check one of them before you leave your hotel, because conditions can change between the city and the summit. If the status says closed, treat the day as closed until the operator says otherwise.

Picking the day

Table Mountain rewards flexibility. If you can, book early in your stay, so a closed day still leaves a spare one. Reserve now, pay later and free cancellation up to 24 hours before make it easy to change plans when a forecast turns. The operator's own hours change through the year, so the booking calendar and your confirmation show the time for your date. Both ends of the day are options: early for the first car, or later, when the operator says it is often quieter. Keep a clear window in your plans rather than tying the mountain to your last afternoon.

Who this isn't for

Skip this ticket if you plan to hike up and ride down, or the reverse: the operator's one-way tickets suit that better. Skip it if you need a guaranteed view, because no ticket can promise weather. Skip it if you want a guided tour; this is an entry ticket, though the operator runs free guided walks on the summit. And skip it if you would rather deal with the operator directly: its own online and ticket-office sales are described above.
